Would mod podge be an acceptable material to use as a substitute for pva?
I have never used Mod Podge but I have just looked it up and it seems to be that it would work fine as a substitute for PVA
I'm just getting started in mosaics, and your videos are very helpful. Many thanks.
I'm so glad that they are helpful. 😀
I think you are the only one showing this difficult process in such clarity! As a beginner, I feel it's a constant struggle between two inner voices: One constantly says, "Oh no! What an ugly gap! That's way too amateurish!" and the other one must constantly calm the first one down: "Trust me. In the end, it will work. Grouting and a little distance will help. No one will notice!" 😃
The second voice sounds like the one well worth listening to! I often listen to the first one even though I know perfectly well that the second is by far the wiser of the two 😀
Im just getting started in mosaics, and this was exactly the information i needed. Great instructional video, many thanks. I look forward to more of your videos. Best wishes.
Glad it was helpful!
Love your videos.
Glad you like them! Thank you 😀
Great content. Could you recommend a book that has an A to Z tutorial in this fashion?
Thanks. The only book that I know of the covers the Roman rules is mine! www.amazon.com/Make-Your-Own-Mosaics-Contemporary/dp/1399006355
@@HelenMilesMosaics Thank you, I will check it out!
what adhesive do you use for glass tiles on glass base/
Hi there. I haven't made glass on glass mosaics, but I would use outdoor silicone glue
Thank you so much, this was so informative.
Glad it was helpful!
💐✋💐
Hello Can i make mosaic from olive seads
Absolutley! Just make sure that they are fully dried out first. I put organic things like seeds in the oven on a very low setting for a few hours to make sure that all the moisture has gone.
This has been so helpful! I’ve been wanting to do some things for outdoors but was unsure of what’s different. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I saw your link for the video using glue, that’s quite helpful too! Will be sure to watch it also!
I'm so glad it was helpful! 😀😀
Wonderful tutorial and so informative.... Thank you so much 🙏😊
Glad it was helpful! 😀🙏
Can I use fiberglass mesh to attach my mosaic to then bring it outside and attach to a concrete block wall? The wall is approximately 3 1/2 meters by 1 1/2 meters. Thank you for these lessons.
Yes, absolutely. That’s what I did when I made the mosaic in the cover photo. 😀
I made a mistake. I'm 500+ hours into a glazed porcelain mosaic meant for outdoor.
Oh no! Are you sure? As I said, the weather gets pretty rough in Scotland. Maybe you are somewhere with a gentler climate?
If using the tire bond, would you also need the depth of glue to be 1/2 or more?
No, the Titebond II glue is just glue so you use a little bit for each tesserae whereas the tile adhesive is a cement based paste which you need to use quite thickly. I've done a separate video on using ordinary glue: ua-cam.com/video/W_DaeN7anP0/v-deo.html
Off to buy materials and a tile nipper!😀
Wonderful! 😀🚀
How long do you leave the grouted mosaic before you wipe it off?
I wipe it off as soon as I have finished spreading it over the mosaic and have scraped off the excess. It's a bit different with glass mosaics which you can leave for ten minutes or so and then rub with newspaper or a cloth.
@@HelenMilesMosaics Thank you! Just getting into mosaics and appreciate your v. helpful videos. 😀
Hi Could you tell me exactly which hanging fixings and sizes to order please and the name/s of the company/ies you buy them from, please.

So nice to see the entire process. ❤
Glad it's helpful! 😀
Thank you. Great tutorial. So is grouting unnecessary/optional? Thank you
No need to grout! That’s the beauty of the method
Many thanks indeed
They are not so accurate I bought one a few years ago ❤it’s still quite hard work
I guess some are better than others. Mine is still quite sharp as I don’t use it much so it does cut cleanly and precisely
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
Fabulous!!!!! Thank you ❤
You are so welcome! 😀
Thank you Helen for this very clear explanation of traditional backgrounds. I’ve just completed a koala up a gum tree on a large piece of pvc pipe. I’m not sure now how to complete the background which will be sky mixture of blues. I’ve done it all in glass. Any ideas? Libby
That sounds like a really interesting project. I have never thought of using a pipe as a substrate! In terms of ways of filling in the background, I would have thought it would be hard to do any other way except crazy paving. ua-cam.com/video/49v8GIwet0I/v-deo.html
Great clear instructions. I think this video along with paperback method has saved my smashed plate table from disaster…I hope.
I really hope so! 😀
Merci pour les explications claires !
You're very welcome!
I know absolutely nothing about making a mosaic but I have all kinds of marble tiles pieces. A lot of them are the result of marble cutters practicing various shapes, curls, etc. Several different types and colors but all some kind of stone, including quite a bit of lapis lazuli. So I really want to attempt my first mosaic. I'm betting with the weight of the tile pieces that I'm going to want a pretty strong adhesive.... but I'll be flying by the seat of pants on this so everyone wish my luck!
Good luck! It sounds like you have wonderful materials to work with. I would use the tile adhesive/thin set method: ua-cam.com/video/zQX-jgauWC8/v-deo.html
👍🏽
Thank you, Helen! Always love watching your videos. :)
So glad that you like them! 😀
Thanks for this
My pleasure!
Thank you! Very useful and just in time for me👍
Great to hear! 🙏😀
You are very kind to show all the detail. You are a good teacher. ❤
Thank you so much!😊
Helen, thank you for guidance. Do you recommend mesh for flooring? I'm wanting to mosaic my (indoor) hallway 😁😁
Ideally you should use the paper backed reverse method for flooring but I have seen professional people use mesh too so as long as you dont get glue in the gaps between the tesserae and there is space for the adhesive to push up from underneath and hold the them in place then you'll be fine.
Thank you Helen. I shall research this method. My flooring is concrete - is it possible to tile directly onto this surface without the need for the boards you have mentioned? 😁😁😁😁
@@al-ma6347 Hi there again! I’m sorry but I only saw this message just now. Yes, don’t use boards for a floor, just mesh or the paper method directly onto the concrete
It's so helpful to see the mosaic being created from the beginning. Thank you.
You are so welcome! 😀
Easy to understand your directions. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! 🌸
3:32 You could also use "nori" paste, which is just the same but instead of wheat flour, it's made of rice flour. It's a bit stronger (safer to avoid losing any tesserae), but water will dissolve it just the same. You can find it ready-to-use in most markets. Also, bookbinders' glue (which is the real wheat flour) can be found, but because of "being modern", some brands sell not-real wheat glue as "bookbinders"... so you should check the composition before buying them.
That's a great tip. Thank you so much for letting me know
Thank you, Helen and Rachel. Such a genuine and warm conversation and sharing about your art space, materials and methods. I feel so happy and motivated after listening to you guys. Beautiful work, Rachel. Thank you, Helen, for this series. Really admire you both as artists and your own unique persons.
Our pleasure! That's very kind of you to say. 😀
okay, so you put on the thinset, what glue do you use to add your tess? I am assuming that the thinset is just the base?
Yes, you apply the a thin layer of thinset as a scratch coat to aid adhesion and then add a thicker layer to hold your tesserae in place
Hello from Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA … I have plenty of mosaic supplies to start creating! Love your videos!! BTW, I love your sweater (plus you are wearing a yellow one of the same pattern on another YT!!) thank you!!
I love that you spotted that the sweater was the same! It's so warm and comfortable that i had to have another one for the rare occasions when the first one is the wash 😀🤪
I use to knit my own sweaters back in college … hard to find simple patterns with that neckline shape .. thank you for the videos… mine are on taxes .. not as fun as yours!! 😅
It is wonderful to find such a resource for making classic mosaics. Would you present a lesson on how you prepare for and create a portrait in mosaics? That would be amazing. Thank you for your work.
Great suggestion but it will take me a while as it's a complex subject. I'll try to get there in the end!
Thank you! That would be fantastic. I’ve been fascinated by mosaics for decades, but I’ve always looked for a way to translate a portrait (as I am a photographer), into a classic mosaic. Thank you in advance.
Fascinating. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Such an amazing series!!! Can't wait to see other artists talking about their art and space!! Bravo!
Thank you - they are great fun to do! 🙏
Never enough shelving! This interview was really lovely! 💕
Thanks so much! 😀
Which glue could be used as an alternative? I don't use animal-edrived materials nor ingredients for ethical reasons, so in order to try this what could I use?
I am sorry to say that I don't think there is an alternative. Rabbit skin glue is unique in the fact that it is extremely strong but also can be washed off
Thank you Helen ! I struggle to create keystones from 1x1cm glass tesserae. Would you advise even trying at all ? Thank you for all of these useful tutorials ! 🙏
Actually, cutting keystones from 1cm glass is hard for everyone. I tend to cut my squares into rectangles and then cut the keystone from the rectangle when I am using glass. Hope that helps!
@@HelenMilesMosaics Thank you for your reply ! ☀ I just received new glass tesserae, 2x2cm : pretty sure it will be easier, following your suggestions. Thank you ! 🙏🌸
Thanks for the interview. I did not know about Rachael. Lovely work! Great job, Helen.
Glad you enjoyed it!
love the video. needed to hear real space .. Create or clean. Create everytime:)
So true!
New mosaicist here. I made three small mosaics while I was in Rome in February and March this year studying Italian. I loved studying Italian and I loved my time in the mosaic studio. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and it's a pity that the Institute of Mosaic Art closed in 2016 or else I would go there to learn more. I have looked around the SF Bay Area and there seems to be nothing. I love your videos. Thanks you, Helen. Do you know of any mosaic "kits" that I could purchase so that I can make mosaics at home or any online classes? Thanks again. I should add that I used the indirect method when I made my small pieces and I worked with marble tesserae. I would like to continue in the Roman style whether direct or indirect. Thanks.
Hello there. I would get in touch with Tami at Mosaic Arts Online. She will know about what mosaic kits are available in the US and also you can have a look at the incredible range of pre-recorded mosaic classes she has available which will help you take your mosaics further. There is also the option of doing my online class which tells you what to buy and then leads you through the making of the mosaic: helenmilesmosaics.org/product/ancient-principles-to-contemporary-art-create-a-mosaic-using-the-roman-rules/. Here is the link for MAO: mosaicartsonline.com/. Good luck with it all!
@@HelenMilesMosaics Thanks, Helen. Very helpful. I am happy to be starting on my mosaic journey. Much to learn.
WHAT KIND OF GLUE WORKS BEST FOR GENERAL MOSAICS.
It depends on where the mosaic is going to go and what materials you are using. Very broadly, use Weldbond for flat materials and tile adhesive (= thinset) for textured and mixed pieces like broken china and shells.
