I think you are the only one showing this difficult process in such clarity! As a beginner, I feel it's a constant struggle between two inner voices: One constantly says, "Oh no! What an ugly gap! That's way too amateurish!" and the other one must constantly calm the first one down: "Trust me. In the end, it will work. Grouting and a little distance will help. No one will notice!" 😃

    • @HelenMilesMosaics

The second voice sounds like the one well worth listening to! I often listen to the first one even though I know perfectly well that the second is by far the wiser of the two 😀

No, the Titebond II glue is just glue so you use a little bit for each tesserae whereas the tile adhesive is a cement based paste which you need to use quite thickly. I've done a separate video on using ordinary glue: ua-cam.com/video/W_DaeN7anP0/v-deo.html

I know absolutely nothing about making a mosaic but I have all kinds of marble tiles pieces. A lot of them are the result of marble cutters practicing various shapes, curls, etc. Several different types and colors but all some kind of stone, including quite a bit of lapis lazuli. So I really want to attempt my first mosaic. I'm betting with the weight of the tile pieces that I'm going to want a pretty strong adhesive.... but I'll be flying by the seat of pants on this so everyone wish my luck!

Ideally you should use the paper backed reverse method for flooring but I have seen professional people use mesh too so as long as you dont get glue in the gaps between the tesserae and there is space for the adhesive to push up from underneath and hold the them in place then you'll be fine.

3:32 You could also use "nori" paste, which is just the same but instead of wheat flour, it's made of rice flour. It's a bit stronger (safer to avoid losing any tesserae), but water will dissolve it just the same. You can find it ready-to-use in most markets. Also, bookbinders' glue (which is the real wheat flour) can be found, but because of "being modern", some brands sell not-real wheat glue as "bookbinders"... so you should check the composition before buying them.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and it's a pity that the Institute of Mosaic Art closed in 2016 or else I would go there to learn more. I have looked around the SF Bay Area and there seems to be nothing. I love your videos. Thanks you, Helen. Do you know of any mosaic "kits" that I could purchase so that I can make mosaics at home or any online classes? Thanks again. WHAT KIND OF GLUE WORKS BEST FOR GENERAL MOSAICS.

It depends on where the mosaic is going to go and what materials you are using. Very broadly, use Weldbond for flat materials and tile adhesive (= thinset) for textured and mixed pieces like broken china and shells.
